New Zealand’s Geography allows you to see a lot in a very short time
HistoryThe Maori were first to settle in New Zealand. They made their epic voyage from the legendary Hawaiki, about 1000 years ago. Legend has it, their greatest explorer “Kupe” discovered New Zealand and called it “The Land of The Long White Cloud” or “Aotearoa”. Dutch navigator, Abel Tasman was the first European to discover New Zealand in 1642, but it was a further 125 years later that Captain James Cook discovered New Zealand and claimed Aotearoa for Britain and produced the very first documented map of this country.
The Treaty of Waitangi is seen as the founding document, which established New Zealand as a nation. It was signed in 1840 between leading Maori chiefs and the representatives of the British Crown.
