About New Zealand

New Zealand is a land of spectacular scenery, vast mountain chains, steaming volcanoes, sweeping coastlines, white sandy beaches, deep fiords, lush forests and emerald pastures.

The country is exquisitely clean & green.

The Kiwi is our national emblem. It is a flightless bird, nocturnal and rarely seen during the day.

New Zealand has recently been voted No 1 most beautiful country in the world and placed at No 5 for the safest countries to visit.

New Zealand’s geography allows you to see a lot in a very short time.

History

Map of New Zealand

The Maori were first to settle in New Zealand. They made their epic voyage from the legendary Hawaiki, about 1000 years ago. Legend has it, their greatest explorer “Kupe” discovered New Zealand and called it “The Land of The Long White Cloud” or “Aotearoa”.

Dutch navigator, Abel Tasman was the first European to discover New Zealand in 1642, but it was a further 125 years later that Captain James Cook discovered New Zealand and claimed Aotearoa for Britain and produced the very first documented map of the country.

The Treaty of Waitangi is seen as the founding document, which established New Zealand as a nation. It was signed in 1840 between leading Maori chiefs and the representatives of the British Crown.
